What Is Reiki?

I always describe reiki in my yoga classes as an energy shifting relaxation technique. It is more than that though. Reiki is a holistic healing practice that originated in Japan, involving the transfer of energy through the hands of a practitioner to promote physical and emotional well-being. Practitioners use gentle touch or hold their hands slightly above the recipient’s body to channel universal life energy, aiming to balance the body's energy, reduce stress, and support healing. The practice is based on the belief that this energy flows through all living things and can be harnessed to enhance health and vitality.

What should I expect when I receive reiki?

For the session, expect to talk about what is going on and why you want to receive reiki for a few minutes, then you will relax on a massage table, fully clothed, for the treatment itself. You can expect to experience a state of relaxation during the session. There are a variety of physical sensations that you can experience including but not limited to tingling and warmth. People also report seeing colors during their reiki sessions. Depending on what you want addressed during the session, I may deem aura clearing to be appropriate, and for that, I will have to make noises that sound “whoosh”-like.

Can I stop seeing my regular doctor if I am getting reiki treatments?

No. Only medical doctors can diagnose and treat medical conditions. Reiki is intended as an add-on to conventional medical treatment, not a substitute for it. Please continue to or start seeing a medical professional for your condition(s).
